When should I bring my child in for an orthodontic evaluation?

Many parents ask, “When is the best time to bring my child in for an orthodontic evaluation?” When the four permanent incisors on the upper and lower have erupted is a good time. In most children this would be between the ages of 7 and 8. At this age the child is too young for full braces, but the future pattern can be approximated. There are also a few conditions that require early intervention. Some examples are crossbites, a large distance between the upper and lower teeth when biting, extreme crowding with obvious rotations, or a Class III relationship (an underbite).

I’m an adult who needs braces. What are my options?

Braces can be done at any age. There are sometimes special considerations in the treatment of a non-growing adult, but often the approach is similar to that of a teen patient. Aesthetic alternatives exist for an adult patient, such as ceramic brackets, braces on the tongue side of teeth (lingual braces), and Invisalign. Invisalign is not braces at all, but rather a series of clear aligners that are worn sequentially under the supervision of an orthodontist. There are pluses and minuses to each of these alternatives, which would be explained during the initial diagnosis.
